How we check

Our goal is that every claim on a page can be checked by you in a minute. Here is exactly how a comparison is built.

1. Fit comes from the maker

Which filter fits a refrigerator comes from the appliance maker's own compatibility page or filter finder. We link the page and show the date we read it. Replacements are matched only by the number their seller puts on them; we say so on the page and never claim more.

2. Certifications come from the listing, by exact model

For the genuine filter and every replacement we search the public NSF listings (info.nsf.org), the IAPMO R&T product listing directory and the WQA Gold Seal listings by the exact model number. We record the standards (for example NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401), the rated capacity in gallons, the lead claim, the listing link and the read date.

3. Model level only

We call a filter listed to a standard only when the listing names that exact model. A listing for the brand, the factory or a different model does not count. If we cannot find a listing, the page says so in plain words.

4. A second, separate check

Before a row is published, a second lookup by the exact model number, made separately from the first, must return the same result. Rows that disagree are held back until resolved.

5. Verdict rules, the same on every page

• Either, if you pick a matching tier: at least one replacement is listed to every standard the genuine filter is listed to.
• Buy genuine: the genuine filter is listed and no replacement we found matches its listings.
• Check before you buy: we could not confirm a public listing for the genuine filter; we show the most complete replacement listings instead.

Prices never decide a verdict. We do not show prices on pages with Amazon links.

6. Freshness

Every page shows when it was last checked. We recheck listings monthly and log changes on the corrections page.

What we do not do

We do not lab test filters, accept payment for verdicts, or publish reviews or star ratings. We say compared or ranked, never tested.
