Which replacement fridge filters are really certified? 2026 check

Last checked October 28, 2026

Short answer: most replacement brands sell three versions of each filter, and the cheapest is usually listed for taste and chlorine only. Of the 67 replacement models we found in NSF's database for 8 popular genuine filters, 27 (40%) are listed to NSF/ANSI 42 only, with no lead claim. 40 (60%) add NSF/ANSI 53 and 18 (27%) also add NSF/ANSI 401.

The genuine filter is not always the most certified: for 2 of the 8, a top tier replacement matches every standard the genuine one is listed to. For the Samsung HAF-QIN, no replacement sold under its number reaches NSF/ANSI 401. And for 2 genuine filters (LT1000P, LT700P) we could not find the maker's own listing in NSF, IAPMO R&T or WQA.

Method: exact model searches in NSF, IAPMO R&T and WQA, each row confirmed by a second, separate lookup. Method and limits.

Finding 1: the same brand, three very different filters

Brands such as Waterdrop, AQUA CREST, Maxblue, Overbest and Amazon Basics list several versions of the same replacement. The names differ by a prefix or a suffix (for example WD, WDS and WDP, or no suffix, P and D). In NSF's database the basic version is usually listed to NSF/ANSI 42 only, which covers aesthetic claims such as chlorine, taste and odor. The other versions add NSF/ANSI 53 health claims, including lead reduction where marked, and sometimes NSF/ANSI 401. A shopper who compares only the brand can buy a filter with no lead claim without noticing.

Finding 2: genuine is not automatically the safest pick, but sometimes it is the only full match

Where the genuine filter is listed to 42, 53 and 401 and a top tier replacement is listed to the same three, the listings give no reason to pay more for genuine; the difference is the maker's own fit guarantee. Where no replacement matches, as with the Samsung HAF-QIN, genuine is the only option with every listed claim.

Finding 3: some genuine filters have no public listing we could find

For LT1000P, LT700P, NSF's drinking water treatment database has no listing from the maker under those numbers. That does not prove those filters are uncertified: the maker may use another certifier or another number. It does mean a buyer cannot confirm the claim in NSF's public listing, while several replacements for the same filters can be confirmed there. We also searched IAPMO R&T and WQA by model number; any listing found there is shown on each filter's page.

Method and limits

  • For each genuine filter we searched NSF's public listings for the filter's number and the other numbers the maker uses, then recorded every replacement model whose own model number carries that number.
  • For every model we recorded the standards, rated capacity, lead claim, the listing URL and the read date. A second, separate lookup by the exact model number confirmed each row before publishing. Rows that did not match are held back; none of the NSF rows failed.
  • We record a certification only when the listing names that exact model. A listing for a brand or a different model does not count.
  • This is a check of public listings, not a lab test. We did not test any filter. Listings change; we recheck monthly and log changes on the corrections page.
  • Replacement models that do not carry the genuine number in their name are not included. The count is of models found this way, not of every filter on the market.
